I love this quote:

“The Tesla fanboys formed like Voltron and ganged up to flag my video for removal on youtube,” Benoit said in a tweet. “The video which was flagged for ‘inappropriate content’ was about me selling my Tesla and buying a gas car instead.”

Ok I had to read the article because the headline seemed to imply Youtube took it down themseles-

“The video was only up for a few hours before being taken down by YouTube for violating Community Guidelines.

“The Tesla fanboys formed like Voltron and ganged up to flag my video for removal on youtube,” Benoit said in a tweet. “The video which was flagged for ‘inappropriate content’ was about me selling my Tesla and buying a gas car instead.”

It’s a fucking cult, what else do you expect?

Not to go all “Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory” but Tesla HAS been very aggressive (if not downright slimy) in keeping ANY bad publicity on their cars off YouTube.

From the first Josh Brown video (severed top of the car after AutoPileUp Failure) through the Huang accident to the rash of Florida crash+fire episodes... Videos get posted of Teslas looking not-too-safe, and somehow within a couple of days (if not hours) there’s no sign of those videos up on the site.

Being just up the freeway from Google, they must have some “inside pull” to delete content that doesn’t stay On Tesla Message.

So, this isn’t surprising.  But it’s pretty fucking creepy.

My theory remains that on anything Musk there’s some “social networking media” consulting groups being paid to populate forums, post fluffy comments and upvote Pro-Tesla posts.

The “subscribe” folk s for Rich love the guy— it’s just hard to imagine, without some outside factor, that his fans would generate a huge deluge of Downvotes and “Report This Video” that fast, for what’s really just another car-themed video. . Just from the statistics, it argues in favor of some other factor.

But, I remain resolute that you can’t really trust anything said about Tesla the company or Tesla the product line.

There’s been a few vintage electronics channels I follow who have had vintage TV repair videos, or even entire channels deleted for violating community guidelines. They all seem to get restored pretty quickly, but the best theory I’ve seen to explain why it happens is that CRTs have an electron gun, and YouTube’s algorithm might be catching and flagging the word “gun” .

I don’t own a tesla but admire what the cars have done for the  auto industry. I also take critiques of tesla with a healthy dose of skepticism. It worries me that the industry is trying to do another Preston Tucker, not to mention the short sellers and what they’d do.

Or they have a whole department of people who trick YouTube’s algorithms to take negative (to Telsa) content down. If there really is collusion between the two companies, I hope it comes to light and gets a lot of national attention.

This company’s been reporting non-GAAP financials since inception, has never made any money actually building cars, is completely distorting the economics of the car business... based on completely baseless assertions by Musk of where electricity comes from... and yet has a $250 Billion market cap? And you’re worried about the Shorts?

That’s *ahem* interesting.

The reality is that all Musk has to do is deliver on the promise, in the mass market, and he clearly will crush anyone dumb enough to short this stock.

The sad truth, at least for the moment, is that it’s all Early Adopters buying the products— they sell great in the first three quarters after bringing new product into a new market— but quickly saturate. US same market sales were DOWN 70% y-y in Q2, but buoyed by new sales into China and 25K cars sold-but-undeliverable carried over from Q1? Looks like a “big beat”. Despite Musk saying the stock was “way over-priced” at $700.

Believe what you want, but not everybody’s who’s a skeptic is a short. Some of us just see a huge bubble forming... and bubbles this big explode catastrophically for a lot of people. Some of us lived through the mess in 2000 and never want a repeat. This is a repeat.

And, for the record, Tucker failed because Preston Tucker dictated some terrible design decisions, while also failing to manage his business.  So maybe your comparison with Tesla is apt, but for different reasons than you think.

Yeah, that’s certainly possible. The audience for Rich is so big and so enthusiastic.... he could post a video of him drowning kittens and get 100K upvotes in the first hour. It’s just hard to see how you could “trick the algorithm” into an auto-pull-down without a lot of bodies or insider help on how to game the system.

I’m serious on the accident videos... those NEVER survive more than a day or two. I defy you to find the interview with the guy who claimed Brown was watching Harry Potter on a portable video player at the time of the crash. Gone. Like the video of the SLC crash into a fire truck. LIke the ambulance crashes from the traffic cameras.

It’s weird, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I’m hauling rally cars around with tow rigs these days... My target is about 4 hours and 250 miles. That leaves about 100 miles safety range “if bad shit happens”. I’ve had a couple of trailer tire blow-outs this year— and you aren’t going anywhere until you deal with that.

Nobody ever factors that in on the Tesla-stories... Nobody sane would ever run into the last 50-75 miles of your range. If you have to go deal with a flat tire or a sick kid or a busted headlight, you want to be able to get to the nearest service/clinic/ repair/tire_shop— which probably isn’t on the freeway next to the SuperCharger.

I would be surprised if it would do 5 hours - a battery with some miles on it, maybe 80-90% of its original max range, add plus running the A/C constantly, and punching the throttle to keep pace or pass on the highway. I mean, my car can only do 400-420 miles on a tank, but 5 minutes or less to completely refill means it works fine for a long roundtrip with no overnights or extended stops along the way.

I don’t think the auto industry is trying to make Tesla the next Tucker Corporation. Yes, they may both have/had sketchy finances and potentially disruptive ideas , but if someone was trying to take down Tesla to protect ICE cars they would have done it early in the production of the Model S, well before so many Teslas had made their way into the garages of consumers. Additionally, no matter how fascinating the “ what if? ” of the Tucker 48 may be, it never was a fully baked product fit for the mass market.

Furthermore , with the way regulations are going (in some parts of the world at least), there is no way any major automaker will be able to get away without an at least partially electrified model range. If something were to happen to Tesla, there’s no way it would just fade like Tucker did. I find it impossible to imagine that no other automaker would want Tesla’s physical property, intellectual property, and brand recognition.

Thanks! Yeah, the videos I’m thinking about were taken day of crash— and somebody got video of the trucker himself expressing surprise that Brown didn’t stop. It also had a pan “downrange” to where the car eventually stopped, to give a sense that the car didn’t even realize that it’d severed its own roof.

The ones posted on the Huang crash were all cell phone videos from cars traversing the section of the freeway the car didn’t negotiate.

To your point, there might be other considerations-- but I don’t think this Rich Rebuilds thing is “the first time ever” the Cult guys got videos taken down.  It’s hard to figure...

Heh. Yeah, the world kinda died that day didn’t it?

Especially since they shamed “the grownups in charge” into doing something ridiculous at the mob’s insistence. Nobody had any respect for the noble cause, the deeper meaning, the history, or even common sense. They just shamed the leadership into doing it...  ‘cause it was a great gag, which somehow got more important than the actual objective.

Which is pretty much a metaphor for most news stories since McBoatface launched...

It’s plausible that people in power believed that the Tucker 48 was not a fully developed idea and potentially would have fizzled on its own without the help of outside influences, thus avoiding negative press for decades from movies, documentaries, etc. So, they decided to give that a go with tesla. Once it looked like it may go mass market, the producers kicked in.

I’d argue that big auto didn’t fully embrace electric auto until the model 3 looked like it was a decent success.

I agree with you on every manufacturer being interested in the brand. The brand is also a lot cheaper when it goes bust instead of big.

This is the problem with the whole large social forums. There’s so much content to go through people can and do abuse protection systems on platforms like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook.

I was listening to a old Joe Rogan where he had on Twitter. Tim Pool was just laying into them based on the content policies and the problems it creates with the platform because a t the time they had something like 4000 total people worldwide for the company which is really no where near enough to process Tweets that need a human reviewing .

YouTube is just terrible with their flags both user and automatic . I had an account terminated after an hour because I tried to use a copyrighted profile pic (at least that’s what I think, they just said some generic violation nonsense ) . No request to change it, no time out, just instantly forever banned. Posted the same content with a different account and no issue.

Twitters stance on terror is simply not cohesive. Tim at the time brought up why antifa accounts were active and that the proud boy accounts had been shut down. They (Jack and Vijaya) went into some BS like antifa is just random people and not organized so we don’t actively pursue accounts to be terminated .

All sorts of stuff came up, from specific account/people bans, moderated speech because of a global platform ,   the whole “learn to code” and system flagging. Tim came prepped with some good questions. Some they could answer and some were just sort of blanket statements ‘ W e’ll have to look into that’ and ‘we’re learning’ , and IMO it was used far too often. I don’t have twitter and this certainly didn’t make me want to sign up.

I mean we’re all different, fer cryin’ out loud! Of course we’re going to have different preferences and opinions about everything. One opinion isn’t automatically the correct one, they are OPINIONS. It’s like the whole stupid pineapple pizza debate. You may not like it, but many people do.  If you don’t like it you don’t have to eat it, but that doesn’t mean you get to insist that nobody else should eat it. There’s nothing morally wrong about combining foods that you think taste good together, so let people enjoy things. And even as far as morals go, if you get into a discussion on that there’s bound to be some controversy. I’m a Christian and some of the things that people of other religions do strike me as morally wrong, and yet they would probably think some of the things I do are morally wrong as well. People are really quick to get up in arms about ultimately really dumb things these days, as a society I think we need to just collectively calm down. We’re all different, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be civil. Whatever happened to putting aside differences?
